The History of the School

Digging the FoundationsMoon Hall School was founded in Ewhurst in 1985 by Mrs. Berry Baker. Mrs. Baker, already a qualified teacher, found that her own eight year old son was dyslexic. At the time she did not think he would be able to cope at a boarding school and she recognised the necessity for a local day school for Daniel and children like him.

Her friend, Andrea Matthews, had a son with a similar problem and in response to the needs of both boys, Mrs. Baker established Moon Hall School for Dyslexic Children in her own home (from which the school takes its name).
Moon Hall developed as a small day school for dyslexic boys and girls aged seven to twelve. Sharing Mrs. Baker's home and grounds, the four years that the school spent in Ewhurst saw the number of pupils grow from two to twelve with many more applicants than places.

Registration with the then Department of Education and Science was achieved and Moon Hall became a corporate member of the B.D.A.

Mrs. Baker soon came to feel that the interests of the children would best be served if they could have all the skills of a specialist dyslexia school but remain within normal mainstream education. These ideals were fulfilled when Belmont School generously allowed Moon Hall to lease part of its extensive grounds.

This enabled the erection of a purpose-built school-house and facilitated full integration with the Preparatory School. The link between us offers, we believe, unique opportunities for dyslexic children. Moon Hall relocated to Belmont in 1989 at the same time becoming co-educational. We spent a year in temporary accommodation whilst funds were raised and the new building was erected and equipped. In September 1990 we moved into our new "home". Our link with Belmont affords many advantages to both schools. Amongst those applicable to Moon Hall is the ability to take dyslexic children as weekly boarders.

Mrs. Baker left in August 1993 to join her husband on an overseas posting. Now returned, she is still very much involved in Moon Hall and became Chairman of the Board of Governors in November 1998. Mrs. Jill Lovett succeeded her - having been at the school since it first moved to Belmont.

Jill Lovett was Moon Hall's Headmistress for twelve years from September 1993 until August 2005 when she left to take early retirement. She was succeeded by the school's current Headteacher, Mrs Pamela Lore.
