Our
main emphasis lies in establishing basic literacy skills for every
pupil, focusing initially on the most vital of these - Reading.
This is achieved by using a method called Phono-Graphix
Pupils follow the National Curriculum.
Those for whom it is appropriate will take the SATs tests in Year
6, which mark the end of Key Stage 2.
Thereafter, depending on the choice
of senior school, some pupils will go on to follow the Common Entrance
curriculum which has a large literature component. Those who do
not require Common Entrance for their senior school, will follow
the Key Stage 3 curriculum. Our chief objective is to ensure that
all our pupils leave with good attainment in basic English skills,
despite their dyslexia.
Personal reading is encouraged
on a daily basis and good use is made of our excellent library.
Pupils quickly aspire to read
the same popular children's authors that are being read by their
non-dyslexic peers. We participate, each year, in World Book Day
activities.
Dyslexic pupils benefit from explicit
teaching and to this end, are introduced to the six non-fiction
genres which help to further literacy across the curriculum. These
genres, along with Poetry, Drama (including Shakespeare) and Classic
Fiction are revisited and extended at Key Stage 3
