 Our
four full-time classes each have their own class teacher who has
appropriate general and specialist qualifications. Classes are grouped
by need as well as by age.
For English and Maths lessons, tuition in each
form is divided between at least two specialist teachers. Individual
help is also available. Our Delta classes (Years 5 and 6) are additionally
sub-divided into two groups for Science, History and Geography.
Form groups never exceed 14 and are subdivided into 2 or more matched
groups for literacy and numeracy
Delta
A number of children in our Delta classes join us from other schools
at this stage. Despite their potential, these children require intensive
intervention. They are able, if necessary, to have two years of
full-time help in one of our Delta classes. They are prepared for
transfer to one of our classes based in Belmont from which they
may still return for up to sixteen periods a week.
Most children entering at this late stage will not go on to take
Common Entrance. This does not present a problem since we have arrangements
with many senior schools to take our bright dyslexics on the basis
of their interview/examination together with the results of our
own monitoring and continuous assessment.
Parents' Meetings are held to answer all queries
about the transition to Belmont from our Delta classes. Transferring
pupils remain registered with Moon Hall and we liaise closely with
parents on all dyslexic-related matters including on next stage
schooling.
All
full-time pupils spend most of each morning on Literacy and Numeracy
Skills. English and Maths are taught in a minimum of one-hour lesson
slots. In the afternoon the complete class of children work at all
normal curriculum subjects and follow a syllabus similar to their
peers in the Prep School.
Moon Hall School pupils never do written French
since this can further confuse their developing English spelling
skilled. However, where time permits, we sometimes offer French
to older children which they thoroughly enjoy.
The Prep School provides Games and P.E. for MHS
pupils. There is every opportunity to play in Belmont teams and
many of our children do so.
Specialist teachers at either Moon Hall School
or Belmont Preparatory School provide Design and Technology and
Music lessons.
Our children mix freely with those in the Prep.
School for all sporting activities, and also in Assembly, at Break
and in Lunch. All wear the same uniform. They participate in cross-site
Drama productions and have often been cast in leading roles. Full-time
MHS pupils have become Head Boys and Head Girls at Belmont as well
as House Captains. We have had children gain Sports Scholarships
and other awards to their next schools. Former full-time pupils
have also gone on to Oxford and Cambridge.
Belmont has a suitable group for any child moving
across (see Form
Structure). The joint philosophy of both schools is that each
child should be able to succeed to the best of his or her ability.
We seek to develop strengths as well as remediate weaknesses.
One talent shared by many dyslexic people is in
the field of Art and Design. Moon Hall School has its own
well-equipped Art Room complete with a kiln. Full-time
pupils create some quite breath-taking work - displayed both in
our Art Room and in Moon Hall itself. Dyslexic children have gained
Art and Design Scholarships following ongoing excellent tuition
in Belmont. |
