Dear Mrs Lovett,
I
just thought I'd drop you a quick email and let you know what
I've been up to.
Upon leaving Belmont and the greenbelt of Surrey I headed into London
to take my GCSE's at a school called Ibstock Place. I left there with 10 A-C grades
and went on to a public school called Emanuel
to complete my A-levels. I left there with Biology, English
and PE. Instead of heading to university I decided to don
a rucksack and tour America for a year, helping out with the Camp
America
program for a season teaching football to American children.
From there I toured all over the USA
and returned to London and then headed straight to Southern Africa. In Cape Town, I was offered a placement for 18 months
as a student teacher teaching English and PE. With the vast
majority of my family based in South
Africa, the country is a
home from home and so was very reluctant to leave once my
placement came to an end. So, I extended my stay and moved
inland and worked as a canoe guide on the Orange River which
is the boarder between South
Africa and Namibia.
Lack of funds and an end to my extended
visa forced me back to London where I fell into the Health and Fitness
industry. I started as a trainee fitness advisor and left
the industry 18 months ago a General Manager of a an exclusive
private health spa in West Sussex.
I
am now working as an account manager for a Marketing Company
based in Chelsea and simply loving
every second. It has been a huge career change but something
that has worked out wonderfully. The best decision I ever
made.
I
have been playing rugby throughout, principally at London
Scottish and representative county and exiles sides touring
all over the globe then for teams in the USA
and South
Africa. I am currently playing
for a team called London French in their 1st xv based in London who are an eclectic bunch, and represented by a wealth
of nations not just from France. My other pursuits include regular
hitting of a squash ball on court and picking my way down
a mountain on my bike.
Albeit many years down the line, but
most importantly, I would like to take this opportunity to
thank Mrs Baker, yourself and all the teachers of Moon Hall
and Belmont for giving me the tools to make a success of my
life to date. Without all your help, well who knows.
I
would like to wish Moon Hall and all the pupils and teachers
who benefit from all the wonderful facilities all the luck
in the world. There isn't a better place to get a firm footing
into life!
If
anyone would like to get in contact with me please do so on
callumcarmichael@hotmail.com. I would love to hear from you.
With all the best, Callum Carmichael |

I was hugely impressed with the technological advances
that have taken place around all the various departments in
the school including the website. These noticed when wandering
around on the day of the Old Boys Football Match. We all had
a fun day including a miniature game of football on the small
pitch next to the 'authentic' old boys match.
A favourite that turned to a disappointment on that day was
that there was no chicken curry on that Wednesday, which I
had fond memories of eating with Mr Derbyshire. Mr Quail did
not recognise me even though I was his Head of House in 1996.
The festivities concluded in a small pub at the bottom of
the hill that many of us had harboured aspirations to escape
to during our time at Belmont and Moon Hall, which was very
satisfying.
I've just finished my time at Wellington College and of course
A-levels, in Art, History and English. I have very much enjoyed
being at Wellington, although having just finished the last
year which is always the most enjoyable one, it is likely
that I will think of it very favourably. I have made many
interesting and exciting friends from a diversity of places.
The sport was always good and we had a successful last season
of football and rugby especially.
I have been accepted to do an art foundation course at Central
St Martins School of Art and Design that starts in late September
and is very exciting. This is interesting as I see that previous
past pupils are doing or have done the same. St Martins has
a very good reputation and it was hard getting in. I'm still
not certain about post the foundation course but degrees in
photography and fashion interest me but if I decide after
the course that I'd prefer to be at University I still have
that option.
I still see much of Owen Bolton who came to Wellington with
me, Toby Geal and Richard Gercke. |

At the moment I am in my
first year at Brunel University studying Business Studies and
Accounting at degree level. So far things are going well. In
my first set of exams I got an A and 5 B's out of the six modules
I am taking. I'm not getting too excited about the results though
as the first year is not as hard as the next two - well so our
lecturers keep saying.
Of course rugby is still a large part of my life and I am currently
playing in the Wasps U21 squad, which I started at the beginning
of this season. Their aim is to try and get everyone in the
squad a contract playing rugby, whether it is in the first team
squad at Wasps or at another club which they have links with.
I'm still undecided whether to take rugby up as a career as
this year has given me an insight into how much work has to
be done to be a professional sportsman.
Between 'A' Levels and university I took a year out. I worked
for six months before going travelling with two friends to Australia,
New Zealand and Fiji. We had a great time and it has definitely
given me the travelling bug.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for helping
me develop skills which I still use today. I'm sure this is
the same for lots of the students that have been through Moon
Hall as well. Without your help, as well as the links with Belmont,
which created a perfect schooling environment for me in particular,
I might not be in the situation I am now. |

I am currently in my final year at Farnborough College of Technology
studying for an HND in Design Technology (Animation, Broadcast

3D Animation has to be a great favourite of mine but it is a
long and slow process just to make one minute of footage!
This year I ran for Student President at College but I am afraid
to say that I lost by four votes!! It was great fun though!
Next year I am going to Shepperton Studios in London to do a

I am doing Work Experience with a Make-up Artist over the Summer
and am really excited about it. I hope to become a Make-up Artist

I hope that you are all well and I would like to say a BIG thank-you

Dear Mrs. Lovett,
Before I start writing, and you wonder who this is, it's Jamie
Nelson-Singer who, hopefully, you didn't forget just yet!!
I certainly haven't forgotten Moon Hall!
Sorry I haven't been in-touch for quite sometime - one of the
wonderful (humm) things about growing up is that you seem to
get busier and busier as each year goes by!
First of all, my A-Levels went well, I thought. I took Business
Studies, Economics and ICT (Information Communication Systems)
I achieved a total of 20 UCAS points which broke down to an
A for Business Studies, B for ICT, and an E for Economics. Economics
was a little disappointing - although it was still my Maths
that was hampering me a bit and that is why I found it so difficult,
I wouldn't choose it again but I am happy that I at least technically
passed it (although with a low grade) and I found it very interesting.
I also greatly enjoyed Business Studies and IT, and now my passion
is not only IT but how ICT systems are used in Business.
I decided not to take a gap year and I'm currently studying
Communication Systems Technology (Hons) at Kingston University
and am in my first year. It is very interesting. University
life is certainly very 'different' to being taught and 'spoon-fed'
in a school situation although I much prefer it now that I am
used to it! I am living with a family in London not far from
the University and am best friends with their son. I'm really
enjoying living in London. There is always lots to do!
Now, more than ever, I can see that Moon Hall really did
provide a good grounding to what is essentially still the
early stages of Education and to life. The main thing that
I can now see that Moon Hall gave me (which I believe is probably
one of the most important things it does), is to show us that
just because you don't get some things first time, just because
your writing is not perfect and you muddle words up, does
not mean that you are not just as intelligent and clever as
everybody else - you might even be more intelligent.
One thing that I have found is that dyslexia, especially
with the help of Moon Hall, only ever gets easier in the long-term.
You may find yourself struggling for sometime - and I know
that I did and I still do occasionally - but you will reach
the top of the hill eventually and when you do you will have
achieved even more than anybody else who might have found
the climb easier than yourself. What I am trying to say to
any current pupils at Moon Hall is that if you work with Moon
Hall, and get help from them, there is no reason that you
can't achieve anything and it will all be possible. It may
take time but it all falls into place in the end and it's
worth all of the effort that you're putting in now. |

After leaving Michael Hall, Rudolph Steiner School
I went on to Godalming College and graduated this Summer from
the University of Lincoln with a 2:1 in Tourism and a 1st in
my dissertation. After graduating I spent time travelling around
Paris, which was great fun, and since September I have been
working for the Specialist Holidays Group, part of the Thomson
Travel Group. I have travelled as part of the job promoting
and selling tourism in Turkey, from Istanbul to Antalya. With
people I work with I have also embarked on a Turkish Studies
course learning the language.
Throughout my summers at university I worked for American Express
in London, this all came about through entering their Advanced
GNVQ Scholarship Awards Scheme in my final year at Godalming.
The awards were targeted at eleven hundred UK schools and colleges
nationally and eight students were short-listed from across
the UK winning for their region so I was very surprised and
pleased when I found I had won for South East England. I was
studying for an Advanced GNVQ in which I gained a Distinction
and had to enter a 500 word personal statement about why I wanted
to work in tourism, my personal and career development and submit
a written report based around my course. As part of the national
awards ceremony in 1999 I had to devise and present a 30-minute
travel-related presentation to a panel of judges from industry
and education.
During my time at college and university I have spent a lot
of time undertaking voluntary work - an interest I still hold
- working in community centres and helping the unemployed and
people living in deprived areas, developing my interest in working
with people, business studies and tourism. I do feel that I
have achieved a great deal as a direct result of all the help
and teaching I had from Moon Hall and all the teachers that
taught me. |

Hi there...
I know it has been quite a while since I spoke to you last
but I thought that as I have a few spare moments I would write
to you to let you know how I am doing. I finished my placement
at the University of Wales in the Micro-Computing department
where ironically part of my job was to teach and train others
(and I can assure you that when I was in your class all those
years ago I NEVER thought of myself being in your shoes...
but you know what I really enjoyed doing it). So after I did
that year in industry I went back to the university and studied
advanced artificial intelligence with neural networks. From
then on out all my time was spent on my dissertation that
I managed to complete with plenty of time to spare (again
I would never have put myself down as someone who was a good
time keeper but now, it is second nature).
Those 9 months that I worked long hours coding and writing
up my dissertation paid off and I gained a 1st Degree for
the efforts (for the dissertation) but unfortunately due to
my not so brilliant second year marks I only ended up with
a 2:2 (but that in its self was to me a big achievement).
My final year marks were of a 1st / 2:1 degree level and that
made me realise that if I had worked as hard as I did in my
final year in the earlier part of my course I would now be
writing to you to let you know that I got an even better degree...
but hindsight is a wonderful thing and I have grown from the
experience.
Saying that because my final year work / dissertation was
of such a high standard I did not have any problem in getting
a job and I was placed with the company that I am now at within
2 weeks of finishing University, in fact I was at the desk
3 days after graduation. So here I am I am now a Web Support
Analyst meaning that I code HTML, DHTML, Java, PHP, ASP, SQL,
MySQL and many other languages (who would have thought that
I would be a language kind of guy!!!) but as well as doing
the coding I assess the business processes that the company
has and manage 3 other peoples work schedule. I am having
the time of my life and the money helps a lot as well. I am
living in London at the docklands which is amazing it is such
an up and coming type of place.
So there you have it, that is in brief my life to date and
again I can not begin to thank you for all that you personally
did for me, but not only you all those others that worked
at Moon Hall when I was there.
I hope you get this mail and if any of it can be of use to
motivate and inspire those who are in the same position as
I was when I was at Moon Hall then please feel free to use
it.

Dear Staff and past, present and future pupils of Moon Hall
School, Email from Nick - published: 27th
September 2002
I thought you might be interested in how I did in my A-levels.
I gained four full new A2 A-levels, I attained a
B for Physics, a C for Chemistry, a D for Maths and a C for
General Studies. I also have an AS (half A level) in I.T.
at grade B.
Due to the problems with the new AS system my Maths
grade was much lower than expected. This meant that I could
not go straight into the degree course I had originally applied
for at Southampton, as the university said that they had to
make sure that I could do the maths required by the course.
However they still liked the qualities I showed previously
at interview, and so consequentially offered me a place on
an engineering foundation year with automatic entry to the
degree course. I was also offered a place on a full degree
course at Surrey. But, I am determined to fulfil my dreams
of becoming a civil engineer at Southampton, a university
in the coveted and elite "Russel Group" ('Premier
League' of universities). So here I am a few days away from,
what promises to be a fantastic adventure.
Do not give up! You all can get there! Moon Hall
will give you the tools, all you have to supply is the motivation
to achieve your objectives.
Whatever you want to do, 'keep at it' and have confidence,
you all have talents and skills that non dyslexics don't! |

I'm at Tormead still working
hard in my first year of G.C.S.E.s. As extra subjects I'm taking
Geography, R.E. and 3D Art (which I'm loving). I'm still convinced
that there must be a school where I don't have to work as hard!
I'm still enjoying my sport and sailing which are keeping me
sane! |

to which he applied, Edward has taken up the offer made by Leeds.
He has just started a four year degree course in International
Business Hospitality Management - the second year of which will
be spent abroad. He is living in the university's new halls

After finding out in my second year of my BA Hons course that
I really did not find the style of teaching at Uni very appealing
I decided to try another venture (much to the dismay of my poor
parents and girlfriend). Well to cut a long story short after
a year of trying everything from selling paintballing on the
street to computer games, I have ended up an estate agent (yes
I know you all love to hate us). It seems I'm rather good at
it and for the last year have been plying my trade in South
Norwood whilst still living in Peckham. Well that is until Friday
when my contract ends (my choice) and I have a week to finish
sorting everything out before next Friday when I'm getting married
(yeah I know scary huh?). After that we are off to Australia
for a few years and I will give you an up date once settled
in the land of the poisonous spiders and massive snakes (what
was I thinking?!) |

I am currently in my final
year at Nottingham Trent Uni, studying for a Television Production
Design degree - which is basically "set design for television
and film" and covers many other aspects of the television
industry as a whole. I have recently booked a round the world
ticket to L.A., Fiji, New Zealand, Oz, Bali, Singapore, Thailand
and home again. I leave on the 22nd September but am hoping
to obtain some work experience in the industry during the Summer.
After my travelling I hope to be able to get some work as a
member of the art department within a production company - although
my dream is to be a presenter. It is a dream I am determined
will come true! One thing I can GUARANTEE is that I would not
be where I am today if it was not for Moon Hall. |

I have now finished my first year at Coventry where
I am studying Geography and where I also have my horse!
I have had a busy or should I say expensive summer. I went sailing
from France to Spain in a big tall ship race sponsored by Cutty
Sark. Once over the sickness it was really good fun and plenty
of parties once the race had finished.
I have also just got back form South America were I went to
Brazil and Argentina. Here we visited the Great Amazon, the
amazing water falls and some of the major cities.
Other than that there has been little change. |

going well and very helpful. Doing well at Sciences. |

After leaving Moon Hall, I continued my studies at
Guildford County School where I obtained eight G.C.S.E.s Grade
B - D. I then went on to do my 'A' Levels at Godalming College.
I took two 'A' Levels and two A.S's and managed to pass all
of them.
From leaving Godalming I worked for six months to save up for
travelling and left England in March 2000. I visited India,
Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, The Cook
Islands, Tahiti, Moorea and the U.S.A.
In February 2001, I went abroad again and travelled in Hong
Kong and Australia before going to other countries including
the U.S. After that I joined the Moon Hall staff where I will
be working whenever I have free time.
Since September 2001 I have been at Liverpool John Moores University
reading Childhood Studies. |
