Moon Hall Memo

25 June 2010 - Summer 3

Dear Parents,
I hope your children have been regaling you with tales of their exams and tests, and that they have had a good experience of taking them, at whatever stage. Of course, this will not apply to our Year 8 pupils; they are still in the throes of preparation for their final Belmont exams. You child will be told the results, but you will have them in writing, also, when you receive the annual school report.

Our Year 6 pupils took the national SATs tests in English and Maths. They are, of course, marked externally. Once we have the results, usually towards the end of term, we will send them to you as an email attachment. Children are almost always awarded the same Levels as the Teacher Assessment Levels, but we feel this external validation of their performance is valuable, to all those
involved, parents, pupils and teachers alike.

Mrs. Preece’s Baby
Claire gave birth to a beautiful boy, she assures us, on 8th May. Mother, father and baby are getting to know each other. We look forward to meeting him after half-term.

Prize Giving
Now is the time of year we normally retrieve cups/shields from last year’s Speech Day. If you have a cup at home, we would be grateful if you could return it to the Belmont office by Friday 4th June.

Morning Drop-offs – a gentle reminder
We recently witnessed a very near-miss from the office window. A child had got out of a car and ran towards the path leading from pre-Prep to Moon Hall and Belmont. Unfortunately, he ran across the entrance drive to our car park and directly in front of a car which was approaching the teacher’s car park. This occurrence is not isolated and for this reason, we do require the children to be dropped on the turning circle in front of Belmont! They should then follow the safe pathway to the children’s entrance to Moon Hall.

Nestlé Cereal Box Tops
Nestle are running their “Free Books for Schools” scheme again. Just 10 tokens will buy a book and there is quite a selection of books to different values. Please could we ask you to pass on any tokens collected to the school. Thank you.

Fundraising for MHSET
One of our governors, Philip Nash, has, as he says, rashly agreed to participate in a triathlon at Blenheim Palace. He hopes to raise £1,000 for the Moon Hall Schools Educational Trust. If anyone feels they would like to support Philip, with a small donation (or even a large one), he would be very grateful. Please make cheques payable to the School and mark them ‘triathlon donation’.
Thank you.

Sainsburys Active Kids and Tesco Vouchers for School

We continue to collect vouchers and your contributions are very welcome. Collection boxes are by the stairs underneath the display cabinets.
We will let you know in due course how many were collected and to what use we have put them!

Brown Envelopes (Moon Hall Full-Time Pupils Only)

This is just a reminder that the brown envelope in which various letters arrive should be returned on a Monday morning to your child’s Form Teacher with any signed slips or letters you wish to send enclosed. We will then be able to use this envelope the following Friday. Many thanks.

Half term is for the recharging of batteries and we hope the weather will encourage our pupils to get out in the fresh air and away from computer games and TV! Although it is probably fanciful to imagine them sitting under a tree and reading a book, I can always fantasize! The serious point is, of course, that they should all read to an adult every day. They cannot afford to take their eye off the ball, so to speak. Where homework has been set, it is purely with the intention of ensuring hard-won gains are not lost.

The staff and I wish you and your children a wonderful half-term holiday. (Let’s hope Icelandic volcanoes leave us all in peace)!

FRESH HOME COOKED FOOD “A HOME FROM HOME”
(A message from Phil Lieberman, Head of Catering)

As a Parent myself of a child who boards I feel I am uniquely placed to give your child a happy
“food” experience, whether a day pupil or a boarder!

Breakfast:
They say it is the most important meal of the day, and at Belmont and Moon Hall it’s no exception.
Breakfast is served between 7.30-7.50am
A typical morning consists of:

  • Cereals (Shreddies, Cornflakes, Rice Krispies, Weetabix or homemade muesli)
  • Toast & Spreads (peanut butter, marmite, honey, strawberry/raspberry jam)
  • Fresh Fruit / Fruit juices / Tea

Also each day we do a “special”, Fruit & Yoghurt , Porridge, Chocolate Spread, Chocolate cereal
Continental, Hot Chocolate & marshmallows & Cooked Breakfast!

Lunch & Dinner:
Lunch takes place in the dining room between 12-1pm in 2 sittings and is presented in a “family” style service. Menus are displayed by the Theatre, at the school entrance and in the Moon Hall cloakroom.

In the evening we offer a three course meal starting at 5.50pm, consisting typically of:

  • Homemade Soup & Fresh Bread
  • A main hot meal or salad bar
  • (Vegetarian by request)
  • Fresh cut fruit or
  • Homemade yoghurt & sprinkles!
  • Plus the odd treat!

If you have any further questions or are a current boarding parent please feel free to contact me!

Best Wishes,
Philip Liberman
